SCV CAMP 1493 Annual Picnic
Nothing could be more
Southern than a summertime gathering outdoors with family and friends for food
and fellowship. The United Confederate Veterans always held such picnics. Their
SCV successors have often done the same. After a hiatus in 2013, we at Camp 1493, 19th Virginia
Infantry, intend to continue the tradition in 2014.
Our annual picnic for SCV and UDC members and guests will be held on
Sunday, September 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at "Buena Vista" (1754 Stony Point Road --
Route 20 North). The estate's main house was built during the WBTS and is one of
the very few such structures known to have been completed hereabout during those
tumultuous years. Clara Belle Wheeler, owner of
"Buena Vista" since the 1960's, has generously offered her home and its
magnificent tree-shaded grounds for our event.
Camp quartermaster Harvey Stoner will provide the picnic's prime entrée.
Harvey’s old fashioned fish-fry has been a great success at our previous
picnics, so he’ll do it again in 2014. Like a good forager, Harvey has
been patrolling Lake Anna and the Bugg’s Island Lake for catfish and croakers
and has bagged his quota already. He even has a new recipe for
hushpuppies. We encourage each and all to contribute other homemade dishes
-- salads, desserts, whatever you would like to share. Attendees may bring
their own beer, wine, or liquor.
We ask for a contribution of $5 per
adult to cover the fish fry.
Guests are welcome. Do invite your friends. Just please help us plan
by telling us how many will be in your party.
